Balch and Beal, and their research teams.
UC Davis Chemistry Featured as one of the Top 5 Deparments for Female Faculty in C&E News
November 25th, 2011
A recent article in Chemical & Engineering News Magazine features the UC Davis Department of Chemistry as one of the Top 5 Departments for Female Faculty among big spenders on Chemistry R&D. UC Davis Chemistry ranks on the Top 5 List for both the number of female faculty (with 10 women faculty), and also on the Top 5 List for having the highest percentage of female faculty (with 25% women faculty). Overall, C&E News figures report that women held only 17% of the tenured and tenure-track positions in 2010–11, up from 16% in the previous two years.
Professor Galli and team receive $1.5M grant for deep carbon studies
October 19th, 2011
Professor Giulia Galli, who in 2011 was named co-chair of the Physics and Chemistry Directorate of the Deep Carbon Observatory (https://dco.gl.ciw.edu/), has been awarded a $1.5 M grant by the Sloan foundation for 2 years. The purpose of the grant is to lead a multidisciplinary team that will carry out experimental and theoretical investigations of thermochemical properties of Carbon bearing systems in the deep Earth mantle. The international team includes scientists from Europe and the US, and in particular Prof. Alexandra Navrotsky at UC Davis, and Prof. Craig Manning at UCLA, co-chair of the PCC.
Giulia has also been awarded an additional $350K to run the PCC directorate out of our Department at UC Davis. This is a terrific honor to our department.
Congratulations to Professor Galli, her research team and the staff that support her programs!

October 10th, 2011
Congratulations to Professor Xi Chen, who has been selected as the 2012 recipient of the Horace S. Isbell Award from the ACS Carbohydrate Division. This award is for the recognition of a younger carbohydrate scientist who has demonstrated excellence in the field and shows promise of continuing to make quality contributions to carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry. In celebration of this award, a symposium will be held at the Spring 2012 ACS meeting in San Diego. The date of the symposium will be March 26, 2012; a celebratory dinner will be held that same evening. If you will be at the Spring ACS please consider attending the symposium and joining in the celebration. Congratulations to Professor Chen, her research team and the staff who support their efforts!
